สิ่งมหัศจรรย์ของโลก

Ancient World Wonders
The creation of the first lists of Wonders of the world is attributed to Herodotus (famous Greek historian) around 140 BC. The Ancient Seven Wonders of the World reflected the ability of the men to change the nature in order to build wonderful and beautiful structures which amaze and inspire the people. The Ancient Seven Wonders list included:

1. The Great Pyramid of Giza,
Egypt
It is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now Cairo, Egypt, and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that survives completely . It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian King Khufu and constructed over a 20 year period concluding around 2560 BC. The Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years.


2. The Temple of Diana, Turkey
This wonder of the ancient world is also known as the Temple of Diana. The temple was located in Ephesus an ancient Greek city. Today was Turkey. The temple was built, destroyed and reconstructed many times since Bronze Age. It was made mainly of marble. The temple was always surrounded by priests and priestesses, musicians, dancers and acrobats.

3. The Mausoleum of Maussollos , Turkey
The famous tomb of the king Maussollos was considered by the ancient Greeks one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The tomb was a rectangular building of around 120 feet for 100 feet. The tomb was situated on a hill overlooking the city. There, had a beautiful staircase with stone lions which led to the top of the platform.

4. Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Iraq
These famous gardens were one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World which was described by the Greek historian Herodotus. The ascent to the uppermost terrace-roofs is made by a stairway. This is a work of art of royal luxury and the labor of cultivation is suspended above the heads of the spectators".

5. Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece
It is one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World that was listed by Herodotus in his famous list. The statue was 12 meters tall. The statue occupied a whole room at western of the temple of Zeus in Olympia, the city where Greeks celebrated the original Olympics games. The statue was made by the Greek sculptor Phidias in honor to the king of the Greek gods and it was the most famous master piece of art of all Greece.

6. The Colossus of Rhodes, Greece
The statue was designed and constructed by the Rhodian . The construction of the statue lasted 12 years around 282 BC. It was said that 13.6 tons of bronze and 8.2 tons of iron were used in the construction. The statue stood in Rhodes only by 56 years, since an earthquake in 226 BC destroyed the colossus which was snapped at the knees and fell over onto land
and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction. The height of the tower is 55.86 m from the ground on the lowest side and 56.70 m on the highest side. Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tones.

7. The Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt
This wonder of the ancient World was located in the island of Pharos just off the coast of the city of Alexandria in Egypt. The great Lighthouse served to guide the sailors that traveled to the city founded by Alexander the Great. The Lighthouse of Alexandria worked by 15 centuries and it was the last of the six lost wonders of the ancient world that disappeared.

Middle Ages Wonders
 During the Middle Ages the amazing structures created by humanity, therefore, many academics and philosophers interested for the great classic civilizations like Greece and Rome. The list includes the following :
 1.The Leaning Tower of Pisa 
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the third structure by time in the Cathedral. The tower presently leans to the southwest at an angle of 3.97 degrees. At the beginning it intended to stand vertically but was impossible due to a poorly laid foundation

2. The Roman Colloseum, Italy

 The Catacombs of Alexandria, located to the southwest of Egypt. Many of the features of the necropolis merge both Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultural points, due to the time period. So some statues are Egyptian in style, Roman clothes and hair style whilst other features share a similar style.


3. Catacombs of Alexandria


Catacombs of Alexandria, Egyptppreciation and pride. It is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering.

 
4. Mosque of Hagia Sophia , Turkey


Hagia Sophia is the most beautiful building that survived to the fire, to the earthquake and the vandalism of rioters but each time it literally rose from its ashes was to be the most majestic human construction ever before seen.


5. The Great Wall, China
The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in China, built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties.

6. Porcelain Tower of Nanjing, China
The Porcelain Tower of Nanjing does not exist now but it was located on the south bank of the Yangtze. It means the “Temple of Gratitude”, also known as Bao’ensi, it was constructed as a Buddhist pagoda, that’s the reason for it’s also known as Porcelain Pagoda, but around 19th century it was mostly destroyed during the Taiping rebellion. However now is under reconstruction once again.


7. Stonehenge, England
The construction has been estimated more than thirty million hours of labors. As mysterious as old, it has long puzzled archaeologists; no one knows why it was constructed, although it’s believed to have been started about 3100 B.C and spanning several centuries. Today only half of the original monument survives, because over the centuries, people taken pieces of the stone for building materials and souvenirs, however Stonehenge is a popular tourist destination.

New Seven Wonders
The New 7 Wonders Foundation is a private organization established in 2001, related with the monument preservation and reconstruction around the world. This organization prepared a global contest on Internet whose goal was to find the New Seven Wonders of the World. This election was made through a global vote on the website. Finally, on July 07, 2007 the election’s results were announced and these are New Seven Wonders of the World:




1. Angkor Wat , Cambodia  
It is a temple complex at Angkor, Cambodia, built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation first Hindu,
edicated to Vishnu, then Buddhist. It’s the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.


2. Taj Mahal , India
It is a mausoleum located in India, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.The Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India.3. Tour Eiffel, France

Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower is the tallest building in Paris. More than 200,000,000 people have visited the tower since its construction in 1889, including 6,719,200 in 2006, making it the most visited paid monument in the world. Including the 24 m antenna, the structure is 324 m high


4. Chichen Itza, Mexico
The famous Mayan pyramids of Chichen Itza in Maya literally means: "Mouth of the well of the Itza", it is located a 75 miles east of Merida, the Capital of the State of Yucatan, Mexico. All of these buildings have the same decoration motives found in Tula. The most frequent representations are warriors and Quetzalcoatl.


5. Statue of Liberty, U.S.A
The Statue of Liberty, is a monument that was presented by the people of
France to the United States of America in 1886 to celebrate its centennial. Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, it welcomes visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans traveling by ship. It is one of the most recognizable icons of the United States


6. Sydney Opera House, Australia
The Opera House was made a
UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007 It is one of the world's most distinctive 20th century buildings, and one of the most famous performing arts centers in the world . It is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour. It sits at the north-eastern tip of the Sydney CBD, surrounded on three sides by the harbour (Sydney Cove and Farm Cove), and neighboured by the Royal Botanic Gardens.


7. Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
The statue of Christ the Redeemer is located at the top of Corcovado Mountain. The entire monument of statue of Christ the Redeemer is 38m high with the statue accounting for 30m and overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro is one of the tallest statues in the world; there is a small chapel housed in the base. It is one of the tourist attractions that every year attracts to more and more visitors.

การเปลี่ยนคำนาม เอกพจน์ (Singular) ให้เป็นพหูพจน์ (Plural)
นามนับได้ แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ชนิด 1.เอกพจน์ ( Singular ) 2.พหูพจน์ ( Plural )

มีหลักการเปลี่ยนคำนามเอกพจน์ให้เป็นพหูพจน์ ดังนี้

1. โดยทั่วไปเติม s ได้เลย เช่น
hand – hand = มือ girl – girls = เด็กผู้หญิง
cup – cups = ถ้วย thing – things = สิ่งของ
house – houses = บ้าน chair – chairs = เก้าอี้
bird – birds = นก dog – dogs = สุนัข

2. ถ้าคำนามนั้นลงท้ายด้วย o, s, sh, ch, x, z ให้เติม es เช่น
mango – mangoes = มะม่วง
brush – brushes = แปรง
box – boxes = กล่อง
glass – glasses = แก้ว (แว่นตา)
match – matches = ไม้ขีดไฟ
topaz – topazes = บุษราคัม

3. ถ้าคำนามนั้นลงท้ายด้วย y ให้เปลี่ยน y เป็น i แล้วเติม es เช่น
copy – copies = สำเนา
fly – flies = แมลงวัน
country – countries = ประเทศ
lady – ladies = สุภาพสตรี
baby – babies = เด็กทารก
city – cities = เมือง

4. คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย y หน้า y เป็นสระ ( a o e i o u ) ให้เติม s ได้เลย เช่น
key – keys = ลูกกุญแจ day – days = วัน
play – plays = เล่น boy – boys = เด็กผู้ชาย
donkey – donkeys = ลา toy – toys = ของเล่น

5. คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย f, fe ให้เปลี่ยน f, fe เป็น v แล้วเติม es เช่นknife – knives = มีด wife – wives = ภรรยา
half – halves = ครึ่ง thief – thieves = ขโมย
leaf – leaves = ใบไม้ life – lives = ชีวิต
+ ข้อยกเว้น ถึงแม้จะลงท้ายด้วย f, fe ให้เติม s ได้เลย เช่น
roof – roofs = หลังคา
safe – safes = ปลอดภัย
chief – chiefs = หัวหน้า
handkerchief – handkerchiefs = ผ้าเช็ดหน้า

6. นามบางคำทำเป็นพหูพจน์ได้โดยการเปลี่ยน สระภายใน เช่น
foot – feet = เท้า man – men = ผู้ชาย
child – children = เด็ก tooth – teeth = ฟัน
woman – women = ผู้หญิง
mouse – mice = หนู ox – oxen = วัว
goose – geese = ห่าน louse – lice = เหา

ข้อสังเกต คำว่า “staff” แปลว่า คณะทำงาน ถ้าใช้เป็นพหูพจน์ไม่นิยมเติม s แต่ส่วนใหญ่มักเข้าใจผิดและเติม s เสมอ การเติม s ถือว่าไม่ถูกต้อง ต้องจำไว้นะคะ
